After Nixon lost the 1960 Presidential election he ran for California Senator. He lost and gave his famous ‘you won’t have Nixon to kick around anymore’ speech. Then he went to work. For the next six years he did everything he could for any GOP candidate. Not just national races, but local ones too. When the 1968 race came around, the Party leadership was amazed at how strong the delegates were for Nixon. The ‘offical’ candidate couldn’t compete with the will of the base.
