Oh, I love that metaphor.
One of the primary reasons Reddit cited for its API rule changes was LLMs profiting off its data for free.
Its data? Seems to me that most of that “data” was actually generated by users. Which Reddit, in turn, profited off for free.
Only one punch? Letting them off easy, I see.
I tend to go with the “distract myself” method. Think about some song, movie, game, etc. Keeps the brain from ruminating on that shit. And usually can manage it long enough that the thought’s barely a vague memory afterwards.
Basically, the idea is: Don’t feed the demon.
There could be something to say for both donating directly to Godot and trying to support Terraria in some form because you think they’re doing good.
It depends on how activist the Terraria devs are, though. If this donation is a one-of statement from them, supporting doesn’t make as much of a statement on your part.
Sounds like a “No Unity games on Game Pass” policy may be on the way.
Downturns in quality always take a bit of time to have an effect. Sites coast on momentum. Sometimes it takes a user a while before they decide the site just isn’t as interesting as before. Sometimes a user might be optimistic that the quality will return and stick it out. Eventually, those user numbers will see a bigger dip.
Of course, when it comes to corporations and finance, it seems all the power players ever care about are the short term. What gets them into next quarter. Most of them are going to be long gone and working on something else before the real damage kicks in.
So, yeah, you’re right. All spez cares about are the numbers. But unless they can pivot this whole enshittification process, those numbers are likely to look different in a few years. Though that only matters if you actually care about Reddit and not just making as much money as quickly as possible.
Talk about rent seeking behavior.
Yep. Numbers alone aren’t what are “significant”.

In this environment, semi-healthy is the best you’re gonna get.
“Alright. Compromise: We only kill half of you.”
So what rules are they breaking that you’re reporting them for?
The real problem I have with conditions embedding themselves in how I define myself is with the depression rather than the unemployment. I’ve only been unemployed a little over thirteen months. The depression is a chronic problem I’ve experienced on one level or another for roughly twenty years. Between the two, the depression definitely strikes deeper to the core. It’s just that the current episode is pretty tough to deal with as long as I am dealing with the isolation created by this unemployment.
Still unemployed. Still in the middle of a depressive episode because of this.
Why would third party apps return? Reddit has lost their trust in a manner that I can’t see them recovering.
Exactly. We can’t trust them to act in good faith.
To me, the argument for accepting Meta into the Fediverse goes beyond gain and loss. If you run an Internet service, you have a moral obligation to make a good faith attempt to interoperate with anyone using the protocol as intended.
But that’s the thing: We don’t trust that Meta will be using the protocol “as intended”.
I managed to do that with Abbey Road of all things, though a Round Trip example. Started the album on my way out. Paused it while doing some errands. Went home, and it finished up just as I pulled in. Of course, I had to get lucky with traffic flow, so I don’t expect to be able to intentionally repeat it.
