The parasocial relationship thing is just fuel to the fire. It may not be the cause, but that doesn’t make it any less dangerous. Angry right wing conspiracy talk is like bait for people with these kinds of mental health concerns. It won’t turn just anyone violent, but it obviously has served as the breaking point for a lot of people.

Why is it that whenever a corporation loses or otherwise leaks sensitive user data that was their responsibility to keep private, all of Lemmy comes out to comment about how it’s the users who are idiots?

Except it’s never just about that. Every comment has to make it known that they would never allow that to happen to them because they’re super smart. It’s honestly one of the most self-righteous, tone deaf takes I see on here.

I’ve been surprised and super disappointed by a lot of the views I’ve been seeing in Lemmy comments lately. Anti homeless, judging addiction, fairly socially conservative, buying into the whole retail theft narrative, and the worst has been the misogyny framed as “realism” or some shit.

Comments like this have always sounded so much more entitled to me than a worker expecting a paycheck. Boomers and C suites bitching about their employees’ desire to adequately support themselves on their wages doesn’t strike you as being just a little entitled?

Or it’s just the only identifying information the media had at the time? Not everything is “missing white woman syndrome.” This is the second article I’ve seen recently with one of these comments.

While I agree for the most part, you don’t think that maybe in this case it’s because:

It involves Munchausen’s by proxy which is a pretty rare diagnosis,

She endured years of horrific medical, mental and physical abuse by the mother which brings up some serious moral questions in terms of what else she could have done to escape,

She didn’t actually commit the murder, it was the boyfriend she met online who is intellectually disabled and is now serving a life sentence.

Idk, that sounds like enough to make a headline without her gender or skin color brought into it.

I’m pretty sure they don’t get paid anywhere near what they’re worth. Same old story in the US: anything that’s important to society, has to do with people’s health, safety, education, and so on.

Making things affordable (or just priced within reason) if they are considered a necessity to live in society.

Yes, there are survival necessities ie. food, water, shelter. But in modern society, we can add Internet, phone, car (depending on where you live) or bus pass etc, and probably tuition for at least a bachelor’s degree.

If you want to buy a boat or some shit, then sure, you should have to take out a loan.

I know there is a shortage at the moment, but I feel your pain for another reason. I am an addict in recovery with add and I will never be able to take medication because the minute I even try to talk about my issues it’s “drug seeking.” But people I know who need to take controlled substances like benzodiazapines who are not addicts in recovery? They’re still treated like drug addicts, even when they have nothing in their medical history that would suggest that, and they never ask for refills early etc.

The opioid crisis drove us so far in the opposite direction that people who truly need a drug can’t get it, and drugs can’t be prescribed for the issues they were literally invented to help.

Also, Stratera is a non-narcotic option. It didn’t seem to do much, but may be worth a try if she hasn’t tried it yet.

The Canary Effect is an amazing documentary about the genocide of Indigenous peoples in North America. It is free on YT. It was where I first learned how brutal the reality was and how devastating to the population. It also shows how it meets the UN definition of genocide. Amazing how we are raised in the US and this is not only ignored in history class, but is instead framed as Indigenous people living happily in Spanish missions and having Thanksgiving with pilgrims.

If you get a chance to read about John Trudell, he had a fascinating life. He was the spokesman for the American Indian Movement when they occupied Alcatraz in protest of the US breaking their land treaty. The government did not stop terrorizing him and his family after that. There’s also an amazing documentary about him but it’s been a long time since I’ve seen it. I think it may just be called “John Trudell.”

Both of these will make you walk away angry though.

I bought a new cable just to use it in a rental car. I had to keep switching between Bluetooth and the cable because my music would only work on one and maps on the other. Then the phone wouldn’t work while charging, so I just drove in silence for hours so it wouldn’t die on me because then I’d be really lost. After multiple rental cars and multiple cables, I’ve never had even a decent experience with it and it pisses me off to no end. It just crosses the line into actually being dangerous on top of being inconvenient.

That’s actually a pretty privileged pov. The hierarchy of need isn’t very forgiving. When you can’t feed your kids, or yourself, it’s hard to give all your attention to a war going on across the world. Which is why US leaders should be leading the US first, instead of dragging foreign wars into their debates so they can try to get political points before an election.
