  • Plus the massacre that started everything was so horrific, it made a clear good guy - bad guy effect in the immediate aftermath. Same as Russia looking like the bad guys invading Ukraine, especially with Zelensky being a charismatic good guy.

Those of us watching from a far, seeing it only on our screens, try to categorize what we see. And decide who we align with.

The problem is that Israel is complicated on a good day, most of us don’t have anywhere close to basic understanding of what’s going on politically there. Then add in the weird religious stuff. (For instance, my dad thinks Israel is ordained by God and therefore the government there is not corrupt, but also thinks Jewish people should convert to Christianity?)

So people feel like they can’t criticize Israel (because God) and also can’t comprehend that bad things are being done by the “good guys” to innocent people. And the innocent people are also of yet another religion that they’ve been taught to fear- so…

And politicians and journalists are also stuck because if they are too critical of Israel, it fuels antisemitism, at least here in the US.

I don’t have a solution, other than for someone smarter than me to figure out how to explain it in simple terms, that can be fed in short segments to the population along with the on the ground reporting. But that would still have to compete with the dissonance in messaging coming from churches.

  • I currently have 130+ tabs open in Firefox and 90+ in Chrome in addition to some other programs open and running (libreOffice, vpn, and others) Everything is working fine on my old laptop with an i5 processor and 16G ram and windows 10, ssd hd

I can’t really game on this, and trying to run a virtual machine is a slog.

But VS Code, database, xshell, calibre, audacity, photopea, even basic video editing all run fine. Granted I usually do one project at a time, so I’m not using VS Code and editing videos at the same time.

The browser tabs are usually always open. Oh, and I actually just cleaned up my tabs. There were a lot more…

I feel like the memory issues are mostly worked out now for most of us.

  • I feel this way about music too. Not just pirated tunes, but copyright takedowns on shorts and in yt vids

Finding new artists as a fan is hard enough. If someone has reposted your music video as their own, sure I get it.

But a minute clip or less? Fans or haters talking about it? Let that thing fly free baby! I’ve found so much new music that was background music. I use the family Spotify account or buy merch more than I buy music these days to support.

I’ve bought so many books from authors that became my favs after they did a free epub once that got my attention.

There’s always the “do this thing free for the exposure” problem - but people who say that are usually trying to exploit artists for their own gain. Fans are different, they are grass roots and not trying to exploit, but trying to recruit.

  • This requirement is what stalls almost all constitutional changes. The last three to pass were 25th 1971 about voting rights for 18 year olds (100 days to pass) the 26th in 1967 about presidential succession (just under 3 years to pass) The last last one (27th) was added 1992 after almost 203 years of meeting the other requirements (It has to do with sitting Congress not being able to raise their own salaries, increases are delayed to the next term. )

There are 6 amendments still sitting out there awaiting ratification by the states.

  • This is the safe space to ask a question you have that you are afraid other people would find stupid.

It’s especially good for things some people feel are common sense, but that others just managed to miss growing up.

Here’s an example. My husband is really smart. But he moved schools a lot over a 3 year period. He managed to completely miss kids being taught 1 is January, 2 is February, etc for dates. He just never learned it.

He knows his birthday in number form. But if he needs, say May 23rd in number form, he’ll look it up or ask me which number May is.

Some people would classify that as a stupid question and be a dick about it. I just answer him. I know he’s tried to learn it, he’s just never sure if he’s right and knows I know.

This sub operates under the good faith that there are no stupid questions, just people who legit missed something along the way.

In life, I would argue, there are stupid questions. But for me, it’s only in situations where someone is clearly just asking questions to make you break, or clearly not listening and asking the same questions over and over without even trying to pay attention, and lastly, weaponized incompetence where people are acting like that because they don’t want to do something and won’t just say no. Basically questions that are exclusively to waste someone else’s time are the only really stupid questions irl imho

But here, you get the benefit of the doubt if you don’t know how to properly brush your teeth, or why May is 5 and July is 7.

I believe the name originated on reddit, and an accurate name would be “thereAreNoStupidQuestionsHere” but the shorter version is what got the brand recognition, but the confusion is understandable

  • Seconding this. 28g of sugar has 108 calories.

Which roughly just over half the amount of calories in 28 g of pecans (193 calories)

    So simple math.

    28g sugar + 28g pecans = 108 calories sugar + 193 calories Gives you 301 calories total

    28g sugar times 2 = 216 calories 28g pecans times 2 = 386 calories

Sugar has significantly less calories per gram than pecans.

When you go by weight, you can really play with the calorie content by substituting calorie dense food (like fats, nuts, oils, avocado) that has a lot of calories per gram with foods that are the same weight but less calories per gram

Carbs like sugar have less calories per gram than fats, and salt has 0 calories, but it adds grams of weight

The pralines are substituting some of the high calorie weight of the pecans for lower calorie sugar and salt. So the weight is the same, but the total ingredients have less calories because of the non-pecan stuff used to top off the weight to get to 28g)
